Case IH now uses the Farmall name from International Harvester's history for its compact tractors. The Compact Farmall C Series sits one step above the A series in the line-up and targets somewhat larger acreages and more demanding mounted implements, without yet reaching the class of standard farm tractors.

The Compact Farmall 40C carries a four-cylinder diesel engine with 2,216 cc of displacement, producing 30 kW (40.2 hp) at 2,600 rpm. At 3,254 mm long, 1,755 mm wide and with a 1,860 mm wheelbase, the machine weighs 1,755 kg with a 40-litre fuel tank; front hydraulic lift capacity reaches 1,250 kg.

With four cylinders, just over 2.2 litres of displacement and a weight of 1.755 tonnes, the Farmall 40C belongs to the class of upper compact tractors that cover lighter farm work and front-loader operation alongside grounds maintenance. Lift capacity of 1,250 kg is clearly higher than the smaller A series and allows the use of heavier mounted implements.

When buying a used Compact Farmall 40C, the condition of the front hydraulics and the lift-arm seals matters, since this assembly takes heavy use on machines that see frequent front-loader work. Also worth checking are the clutch, the tightness of the cooling system, and tyre condition, which can wear unevenly on compact tractors used this way. The three-point linkage bearings are worth checking for play as well.
