The 9100 series was the first articulated-tractor generation Case IH built under its own name at the Fargo plant in North Dakota after the takeover of Steiger in 1986 – the successors to the Steiger models Puma, Cougar, Panther and Tiger with which the prairie maker had built up the articulated-tractor market since the 1960s, now in red and with Case IH nomenclature. The type logic: 91 marks the range, the last two digits the power step – 9110 about 200 hp, 9130 about 235, 9150 about 280, 9170 about 335, 9180 about 375 hp – the versions comprise wheeled articulated tractors on duals or triples. The engines are the Case six-cylinder 6TA-830 of 8.3 litres in the small and Cummins six-cylinders LTA-10 and NTA-855 of 10 and 14 litres in the big models, at 2,100 rpm; the transmissions are 12-speed powershifts or 24-speed synchromesh gearboxes.

The 9100s are the bridge between Steiger and Case IH – the last articulated tractors that carried Steiger designs unchanged under the new badge; in 1990 the 9200 series followed with a revised cab.
