The U1 carries an air-cooled single-cylinder engine of 399 cm³ displacement, running on either petrol or diesel, and a 4/2 gearbox with four forward and two reverse gears. With drive to both wheels of its single axle, an unladen weight of 500 kg, a length of 2,850 mm, a width of up to 950 mm and a height of 1,250 mm, it reaches a top speed of 13.6 km/h.
At 13.6 km/h the U1 falls within driving licence category L up to 40 km/h. The narrow build of under a metre in width suits the walking tractor to work between tight crop rows, such as those found in vineyards, orchards and vegetable growing; air cooling spares the simple block engine a water pump and radiator.
When buying such an old walking tractor second-hand, the condition of the cooling fins and air ducting, wear on the clutch and gearbox, and rust on the sheet-metal parts of the block housing matter. Because Bungartz walking tractors are rare today, the completeness of attachments and original parts usually decides the value of the vehicle.
