The MTZ-50 series was built by the Minsk Tractor Works and, as the Belarus export model, shaped agriculture across much of the Eastern Bloc and parts of Western Europe; the register lists models from 1961 to 1977. The recorded models all use four-cylinder engines with displacement from 4,050 to 4,750 cm³.

Recorded operating weight runs from 2,420 to 3,230 kg, wheelbase from 2,360 to 2,460 mm, and the rated speed of one recorded model is 24.8 km/h. Variants such as the four-wheel-drive MTZ-52A broadened the series' range of use.
The MTZ-50 was regarded as an easy-to-maintain, rugged utility tractor and was produced in enormous numbers. For used examples, parts availability is usually unproblematic, since many components remained unchanged for decades and are still produced today.
The MTZ-50 series was built in the 1960s and 1970s, in part before the international standardisation of the three-point hitch under ISO 730 in 1977; its power take-off, however, already ran at 540 revolutions per minute, the speed later adopted as the standard. The Minsk Tractor Works still exists today and continues to build tractors under the Belarus brand, which eases the supply of spare parts for older MTZ series and keeps a great many surviving units in active agricultural use around the world to this day.
