The Lipetsk Tractor Plant built the KD-35 range in the Soviet city of Lipetsk in the first years after the war, one of the first newly designed agricultural tractors of the Soviet Union after the Second World War. Unlike the heavy skidding tractors from the same country, the KD-35 was intended for field work in agriculture.

The KD-35 carries a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine with 4,084 cm³ of displacement, producing 37 hp at 1,400 rpm. At 3,700 kg, 3,080 mm long, with a 1,650 mm wheelbase and 1,430 mm width and 1,420 mm height, the machine is noticeably lighter and lower than the heavy tracked tractors used for forestry work; top speed stood at a good 9 km/h.

As a tracked tractor, the KD-35 transferred its pulling force to the field surface across its tracks, letting it work on soft or damp ground where a wheeled tractor of the same power class would start to slip. The low top speed was sufficient for field work with a plough and harrow of the period, but the machine was not intended for travel on public roads.

When buying one of these early postwar tracked tractors used, the condition of the tracks and drive wheels matters most, as their wear after decades of service can barely still be repaired with original parts. Equally important are the tightness of the cooling system and the condition of the clutch, since both components on machines of this age have often been overhauled or replaced.
