Belarus is the export brand of the Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ), which has built tractors in the Belarusian capital Minsk since 1946 and, with several million units produced, ranks among the world's largest tractor makers; the brand supplies more than 100 countries, with strongholds in Russia, the successor states of the Soviet Union, Africa and Latin America. The 2000 range is among the more powerful wheeled tractors of the plant, and its 2422 model is one of the faster versions of the programme.

The 2422 carries a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine of 7,120 cm³ displacement, producing 156 kW (212 hp) at 2,100 rpm and giving the tractor a top speed of 39.5 km/h – for a wheeled tractor of this engine size a comparatively high road speed, aimed at road transport rather than field work alone. With an unladen weight of 8,370 kg, a wheelbase of 2,980 mm, a length of 6,090 mm, a width of 2,450 mm and a height of 3,140 mm, it is built more compactly than heavier versions of the brand with comparable engine power.
At 39.5 km/h the 2422 falls within driving licence category T, which covers design top speeds above 40 km/h; the PTO follows the standardised speeds of 540 or 1,000 rpm, and the three-point hydraulics follow ISO 730. The water-cooled six-cylinder is built for sustained load in draft and transport work, as it occurs during ploughing, harvest transport and road travel between farmyard and field.
When buying second-hand, the operating hours, the condition of the injection pump and cooling system, wear on the clutch, shuttle transmission and brakes, and the tightness of the hydraulics after years with three-point implements all matter.
