Belarus is the export brand of the Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ), which has built tractors in the Belarusian capital Minsk since 1946 and, with several million units produced, ranks among the world's largest tractor makers; the brand supplies more than 100 countries, with strongholds in Russia, the successor states of the Soviet Union, Africa and Latin America. The 1800 range is among the more powerful wheeled tractors of the plant, and the 1802 model has been built since 2006.

The 1802 carries a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine of 7,120 cm³ displacement, producing 132 kW (180 hp) at 2,100 rpm – an engine of this size belongs to the class of heavy field tractors for tillage and transport, not to that of light farmyard or municipal tractors. With an unladen weight of 11,000 kg, a length of 6,200 mm, a width of 2,100 mm and a height of 2,920 mm, the tractor is sized accordingly and built to carry heavy tillage implements.
Tractors of this power class fall under driving licence category T, which covers design top speeds above 40 km/h; the PTO runs at the standardised speeds of 540 or 1,000 rpm, and the three-point hydraulics follow ISO 730 in the upper categories.
