The Altai Tractor Plant in Rubtsovsk, in the Soviet-era, now Russian, Altai region, built, alongside wheeled tractors such as the DT-54, above all the T-4 crawler tractor and its development, the T-4A, for heavy tillage. The digit in the designation orders the generation, and A marks the updated version. The Rubtsovsk plant was one of several Soviet tractor factories built as part of the industrialisation of Siberia from the 1940s onward.

The heavy crawler tractors were designed for large-scale tillage on the kolkhozes and sovkhozes of Siberia and Kazakhstan, where their low ground pressure and high drawbar pull were needed on the vast, often damp steppe fields. Mounted implements such as multi-bottom ploughs, cultivators and seed drills were carried via the three-point linkage or the tow hitch, depending on the tractor version.
When buying used, what counts is the condition of the undercarriage and tracks, the compression of the diesel engine, the clutch and final drives, and corrosion on the frame and panels; parts for this Soviet-era series are today only available through specialist dealers in the post-Soviet states.
