Allis-Chalmers was a US farm machinery maker with its main plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The FD series with the types FD-3, FD-4 and FD-5 ordered the models by ascending size according to the digit; the designation FD marked the diesel versions of each power class. Milwaukee had been the central Allis-Chalmers site since the company's founding in 1901 and remained so until the end of independent tractor production in the 1980s.

In switching from petrol to diesel engines, Allis-Chalmers was responding, like the rest of the US industry, to rising fuel costs and the greater economy of diesel in continuous work; the FD series thus covered the small to medium farm size. The switch to diesel brought markedly lower fuel consumption in continuous field work compared with the older petrol models.
When buying used from this early series, what counts is the condition and compression of the diesel engine, injection pump and injectors, clutch and gearbox, and corrosion on panels and wings; parts for this widespread mechanism are available through specialist vintage tractor dealers.
