Allis-Chalmers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was among the major US tractor makers of the 1920s. As was customary for other brands of the time, the double name of the early types 15-30/18-30, 20-25 and 25-40 states the drawbar and belt horsepower, the standard measure of a tractor's performance at the time. Such models with an open steel frame and driver's seat without a cab were the industry-standard design of the 1920s, before enclosed cabs became widespread.

The register lists 3 versions with 13.1 to 25.2 kW from four-cylinder engines of 7,556 to 8,361 cm³ displacement, run on kerosene or petrol blends. Unladen weights range from 2,722 to 3,266 kg, lengths from 3,429 to 3,861 mm, widths from 1,676 to 1,905 mm, at a height of 1,727 mm.
The large-displacement, low-revving kerosene and petrol engines were typical of the transitional period before diesel became widespread in agricultural machinery; such tractors pulled multi-bottom ploughs and drove stationary threshers via the belt pulley. The cleated iron wheels fitted to these early tractors were intended for field use and were not approved for road travel.
When buying used from this early series, what counts above all is preservation and originality, the condition of cylinders and carburettor, the cooling system and belt pulley, and corrosion on panels and frame; parts run exclusively through specialist vintage tractor restorers.
