The 8600 series, like the smaller 4600 range, belonged to the tractors AGCO continued to build under the AGCO Allis brand after taking over the North American Deutz-Allis business in 1990/91; it occupied the mid power class with six-cylinder engines. In layout and cab the series directly followed on from the last independent Allis-Chalmers models of the 1980s.

In this power class AGCO Allis competed with the established six-cylinder tractors of John Deere, Case IH and Ford New Holland for mid-size and larger farms in North America and Europe. In 2001 AGCO dropped the AGCO Allis and AGCO White brands in favour of the corporate AGCO brand; the group had already acquired Massey Ferguson in 1994.
