Its predecessor was the Zanello 280 A. It was succeeded by the Pauny Rino 3000 280 A. The Pauny Zanello series covers 13 models. Rated output within it ranges from 60 to 300 hp; the Pauny Zanello 280A sits in the middle of that range with 180 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the Pauny Zanello P-Trac 160 C below it with 160 hp and the Pauny Zanello 540C above it with 240 hp. 68 Zanello models across 4 series are on record.

Pauny Zanello – the workforce takes over the plant (2002): 160P to 700C and P-Trac from Las Varillas, A for articulated, C for standard, Cummins six-cylinders, 45 to 220 kW

Pauny is the continuation of Zanello under a new name: when the Argentine tractor maker from Las Varillas went bankrupt in the 2001 economic crisis, workforce, dealers and the municipality took over the plant and founded Pauny in 2002 – named after the initials of the founding groups – which continued the Zanello designs and is today Argentina's largest domestic tractor maker. The models in the register carry the double name Pauny Zanello from the first years. The type logic: the number roughly gives the output in hp, the letters the layout – A for the articulated four-wheel-drive tractors (articulado), the heritage of the Zanello large tractors, C for the conventional standard tractors, P and CC for equipment variants, P-Trac for the range of the 2010s. The engines come from Cummins of Argentine manufacture, six-cylinders in all classes, a Perkins in one model.

The register lists 13 versions with 45 to 220 kW (60 to 300 hp) from six-cylinders at rated speeds of 2,000 to 2,500 rpm – all diesel.

Pauny is a special case in tractor history: a plant that survived its closure because the workforce took it over in a crisis that let Argentina's agriculture grow through the soy boom of the 2000s of all things – the articulated 500C to 700C have served the large farms of the Pampas ever since.

Used Paunys are common in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay; when buying, engine condition, articulation joint and transmission on the four-wheel-drive tractors, hydraulics and parts supply through Pauny and Cummins are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
