Jaguar Cars of Coventry emerged in 1945 from the coachbuilder SS Cars founded in 1935 and passed through British Leyland and Ford before moving to Tata Motors in 2008. Daimler, a long-established British maker, was taken over by Jaguar in 1960 and lived on as a separate luxury brand usually sharing Jaguar engineering – the Sovereign was Daimler's trim variant of the respective Jaguar saloon, as with the 420, sold in parallel as the Jaguar 420 and the Daimler Sovereign. The Mark 2 of 1959 is regarded as one of the style-defining post-war Jaguar sports saloons. The S-Type first appeared in 1963 as an offshoot of the Mark 2 and was relaunched as a standalone model under Ford in 1999. The X350 XJ generation of 2003 was the first Jaguar saloon with an all-aluminium body; the XJ220 of 1992 was a limited-production supercar with a twin-turbo V6 that, at launch, was regarded as one of the fastest production cars in the world.
