The Volvo FM series is the medium-duty range between compact distribution vehicles and the flagship FH, covering both long-haul work and construction and municipal duties. The numbers after the FM designation – 370, 410, 450, 460 and 500 – denote engine output in horsepower; U3FMA3 is an internal chassis or registration code. Models in the register are powered by two straight-six engine families: the 10.8-litre D11 in the lower-output versions and the 12.8-litre D13 in the more powerful ones. Volvo deliberately positions the FM series between the road-focused FH and the construction-focused FMX.

On a used example, besides the usual frame and cab check, it is worth establishing exactly which engine variant is fitted, as the D11 and D13 have different service intervals and parts. On chassis with crane or tipper bodies, the hydraulic connections and frame reinforcements should be checked, and on tractor units the fifth wheel and air suspension. The AdBlue system and particulate filter should be checked for fault codes on all versions. Parts supply through the Volvo dealer network is very good.
