Volvo FB 88 – the F88 with Europe's first tilting cab: 9.6-litre TD120 six-cylinder, 190 kW, 22 to 22.5-tonne gross vehicle weight

The Volvo FB 88 belongs to the F88 range, which Volvo introduced in 1965 and which was the first European truck with a fully tilting cab; the range was built into the 1970s in Gothenburg, Sweden. The F88 was powered by the Volvo TD120 six-cylinder engine of 9.6 litres; the numerical and letter suffixes in the model names, such as 88-42 or 88-46, denote wheelbase and chassis variant. Volvo was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg and built trucks alongside cars from the outset; the F88 replaced the older ranges with a fixed, non-tilting bonnet.

The register lists 12 versions here with 190 to 191 kW from six-cylinder engines of a constant 9,600 cc, kerb weights of 7,780 to 18,300 kg, gross vehicle weights of 22,000 to 22,500 kg, lengths of 6,390 to 10,700 mm and widths of 2,470 to 2,550 mm.

The F88's tilting cab set a standard the entire European truck industry followed, and established Volvo's reputation as a builder of driver-friendly long-haul trucks; it competed with the Scania LB 110 and the DAF 2600. Together with the related F86, the range formed the backbone of Volvo's long-haul programme in the late 1960s, before being replaced by the F10/F12 generation.

On these historic Volvo trucks, key points are corrosion on the frame, cab mountings and load bed, the condition of the mechanical injection pump, and the brakes and steering, which on many surviving examples have been restored; parts come mainly through the classic-vehicle trade and veteran truck clubs.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
