Volvo F10, F12 and F16 – the classic long-haul trucks of 1977 to 1993: four- to six-cylinder in-line engines, 213 to 368 kW, 9.6 to 12 litres of displacement

The Volvo F10, together with the more powerful sister models F12 and F16, forms the second generation of Volvo's long-haul trucks, launched in 1977 as the successor to the F86/F88/F89 range at the Tuve plant near Gothenburg and built until replacement by the FH range in 1993. The number in the type designation gives the approximate displacement class: F10 for around 10 litres, F12 for around 12 litres and F16 for the range's largest in-line engine; suffixes such as 4X2, 6X2 and 8X2 in the model names denote the number of axles and the drive configuration.

The register lists 11 versions with outputs from 213 to 368 kW from in-line engines with four to six cylinders and 9,600 to 11,983 cm³ of displacement. Unladen weights range from 7,090 to 13,770 kg, gross weights from 17,000 to 25,000 kg, lengths from 5,600 to 9,600 mm and widths from 2,480 to 2,550 mm.

The F10, F12 and F16 were the backbone of Volvo's long-haul fleet in the 1980s and competed directly with Scania's 2 and 3 series and with the Mercedes-Benz NG; with the F16, Volvo fielded one of the most powerful production trucks in Europe at the time. The range also set the boxy cab shape Volvo kept until the FH generation.

When buying used, the condition and mileage of the in-line engine, the clutch and manual gearbox, the frame and leaf springs, and the brake system and cab mounts all matter. Rust on the frame rails, cab floor and wings is common on the older model years; parts for engine and drivetrain are available through Volvo specialists and the independent parts trade.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
