Volvo D13H — the 13-Liter Long-Haul Platform – inline six-cylinder diesel, the standard engine of the Volvo VNL range since 2005, with the D13TC turbocompound variant

The D13 is Volvo's 13-liter inline six-cylinder engine for long-haul trucking; the "D13H" entries in SpecCodex sit within this same engine family. Model designations such as D13H - 375 or D13H - 500 follow Volvo and Mack's common convention of stating the horsepower rating directly in the model name.

Volvo introduced the D13 in 2005 as the successor to the D12, with the North American version following in 2007 to meet local emissions rules. The 2017 generation brought a new common-rail injection system and a redesigned piston bowl for cleaner, more efficient combustion; alongside it, Volvo introduced the D13TC turbo-compound variant, which mechanically recovers exhaust energy.

The D13 has been the standard engine for Volvo's North American VNL long-haul trucks since its introduction and also powers coaches such as the Prevost H-Series.

Like other heavy Volvo/Mack diesels, the D13 runs on wet cylinder liners that can be replaced individually during a major overhaul. The D13TC's turbocompound technology uses an additional exhaust turbine coupled to the crankshaft to mechanically convert otherwise wasted exhaust energy into drive power — a method that saves fuel especially during steady long-haul cruising.

On a used D13-powered vehicle, match the exact engine variant to the model year, since the injection system and aftertreatment changed significantly across the 2014 and 2017 updates; documented EGR/SCR service history is an important buying criterion.
