Volvo FMX – the construction and off-road variant of the FM from Gothenburg: portal axles, 6x4 to 10x4 axle configurations, D11/D13/D16 engines, 278 to 405 kW, up to 53 tonnes gross weight

The FMX is Volvo's construction and off-road variant of the FM, in the range since 2010 and built at the Tuve plant near Gothenburg. It takes over the cab and basic structure of the FM but gets a reinforced frame, greater ground clearance and portal axles for use in quarries, mining and on construction sites. The type designation gives the power in hp after FMX – FMX 460 is thus about 460 hp – the abbreviation EEV stands for the voluntary Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle emission standard, Tridem for the triple rear axle on tippers, and the axle formula (6x4, 6x6, 8x4, 8x6, 10x4) for the number of driven wheels and total axles. The FMX is powered by Volvo's own in-line six-cylinder D11, D13 and D16 engines.

The register lists here 35 versions with 278 to 405 kW from six-cylinders of 10,837 to 12,780 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 11,766 to 25,745 kg, gross weights from 19,300 to 53,000 kg, lengths from 7,600 to 13,520 mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,800 mm.

In the construction segment the FMX competes chiefly with the Mercedes-Benz Arocs, the Scania XT and the MAN TGS; it is common as a tipper, mixer chassis, mining haul truck and with crane bodies, and is regarded as particularly capable off-road thanks to the sturdy portal axles and high ground clearance.

On used examples, the condition of the portal axles and differential locks, wear on the clutch and brakes from construction-site use, frame cracks under tipper bodies, the service history of the D11/D13/D16 engines and corrosion on the underrun protection and frame extensions all count; spare parts run through the Volvo dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
