Karmann Colorado and Missouri – motorhomes on the VW T4 base: 2.5-litre TDI and V6 petrol engines, five and six cylinders, unladen weights up to 2.9 tonnes

Karmann, the Osnabrück coachbuilder known for the Karmann Ghia and numerous convertible bodies for Volkswagen, built motorhomes on the VW T4 base under the name Karmann Mobil in the 1990s. Colorado and Missouri were the two model ranges of this motorhome line, TDI marking the diesel-engined version, and the suffixes H and S on the Missouri denoting different floorplans or equipment levels. Karmann ended vehicle production in 2009 following the company's insolvency.

The register lists 7 versions in this range with a displacement of 2,461 cm³ from five- and six-cylinders, unladen weights of 2,340 to 2,940 kg, gross weights of 3,300 to 3,500 kg and widths of 2,100 to 2,370 mm.

With the T4 as the base vehicle, Karmann Mobil positioned itself in the compact motorhome segment between camper conversions and fully integrated motorhomes, aimed at buyers wanting to combine the everyday usability of a van with living comfort.

When buying a used example of these motorhomes, checks include damp in the roof structure, windows and wall joints, the condition of the gas system for cooking and heating, the leisure battery, and on the base vehicle the usual TDI checkpoints such as the timing belt and injection; since Karmann no longer exists as a manufacturer, parts for the body run through motorhome specialists and for the mechanicals through the Volkswagen network.

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
