The HITECH series from Valmet/valtra includes the 6550 HiTech. Production: 1998–2006. The engine delivers 100 hp (73.5 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 4,397 cm³. Rated speed is 2,200 rpm. The machine is 4,520 mm long, 2,360 mm wide and 2,720 mm high. The unladen weight is 4,720 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,340 mm. Ground clearance is 434 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. Transmission: 36 V/36 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 480/65 R 28 AS, rear 600/65 R 38 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 108 mm. The stroke is 120 mm. The compression ratio is 16.5:1. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The HITECH-Baureihe series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 80 to 120 hp; the 6550 HiTech sits in the middle of that range with 100 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 6350 HiTech below it with 90 hp and the 6650 HiTech above it with 110 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 4,399 to 4,770 kg; here the 6550 HiTech sits at the top of that range with 4,720 kg. 20 Valmet/valtra models across 3 series are on record.

Valmet/Valtra HiTech range – five large 1990s tractors from Suolahti, 6250 to 6850 HiTech: 55.2 to 88.3 kW, four-cylinder diesels of 4,397 cm³, 4,399 to 4,770 kg

The HiTech range was built in the 1990s at the Finnish Suolahti plant, in the transitional period when Valmet and Valtra grew together into the joint Valtra brand. The five types from 6250 to 6850 HiTech carry the ascending power step in their designation, all sharing the same four-cylinder diesel of 4,397 cm³ but differing in turbocharging and engine tuning. The HiTech suffix marked the then-new generation with electronically controlled injection and an improved cab.

The register lists here 5 versions with 55.2 to 88.3 kW from four-cylinder engines of 4,397 cm³ and torque from 360 to 460 Nm at a rated speed of 2,200 rpm. Unladen weights range from 4,399 to 4,770 kg, length from 4,450 to 4,585 mm, width from 2,179 to 2,360 mm and height from 2,720 to 2,800 mm.

With the HiTech range the Finnish brand positioned itself in the upper mid-range against Fendt, Deutz-Fahr and Massey Ferguson, drawing on the reputation of Finnish tractors for cold-weather toughness and low maintenance. The range also marks the transition from the Valmet brand to today's Valtra.

Buying used, the HiTech models call for checking the electronic injection, the condition of the cab mounts and the tightness of the hydraulic valves; after thirty years of service the cooling system and clutch are common wear points. Parts are stocked through the Valtra dealer network, as the range technically belongs to today's model line.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
