The Universal 600 range represents the mid power class of the Romanian tractor maker UTB (Uzinele Tractorul Brașov), based in Brașov, which sold its tractors abroad under the Universal brand and at home under the UTB name. The plant built a wide range of wheeled tractors for decades, both for domestic farming and for export to numerous countries. For decades UTB was one of the Eastern Bloc's biggest tractor exporters, selling into Western Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, where the rugged and easily serviced Universal tractors competed on price with Western brands and earned a reputation as undemanding workhorses for smaller and medium holdings. The 600 class occupied the middle ground between the marque's more common smaller models and its larger, more powerful types.
On used examples, the condition of the injection pump and cooling system, rust on sheet-metal parts and mudguards, the state of clutch and gearbox, and the tightness of the hydraulic pump and lift linkage all count; spare parts run through Eastern European specialists and the used market, since factory supply no longer exists and original parts are increasingly replaced by reproductions.
