Toyota Crown as a van-register entry: pickup and utility versions of the upmarket saloon built for export markets, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, 79 to 127 kW, gross weight up to 2,145 kg

The Crown is Toyota's long-running upmarket saloon, built since 1955 mainly for the Japanese home market. Alongside the saloon, pickup and utility versions with an open load bed were built on the same underpinnings for select export markets, particularly in southern Africa, identifiable in the register by suffixes such as “Pick Up”, “Utility” and “Commercial”. They offered an affordable, rugged load carrier where the Hilux was not on sale, largely sharing engine and chassis with the Crown saloon.

The register lists 8 versions with 79 to 127 kW from four-cylinders of a constant 1,990 cm³, unladen weights from 1,230 to 1,370 kg and gross weights from 2,045 to 2,145 kg. Length runs from 4,688 to 4,750 mm, width from 1,690 to 1,700 mm.

As a commercial vehicle, the Crown pickup remained a regional sideline next to the saloons, which served in Japan as taxis and company and official cars; on export markets it acted as a simple load carrier with the comfort of a passenger-car chassis.

On a used open-bed example, rust in the floor pan and wheel arches matters, along with the condition of the rear leaf springs under load and the carburettor or early injection of the 2.0-litre engine. Since the engine and chassis are related to the Crown saloon, some wear parts can be sourced against that base.
