The Crown is Toyota's long-running upmarket saloon, built since 1955 mainly for the Japanese home market. Alongside the saloon, pickup and utility versions with an open load bed were built on the same underpinnings for select export markets, particularly in southern Africa, identifiable in the register by suffixes such as “Pick Up”, “Utility” and “Commercial”. They offered an affordable, rugged load carrier where the Hilux was not on sale, largely sharing engine and chassis with the Crown saloon.
