Suzuki Samurai: the collection page for the ladder-frame light off-roader, Commercial and Van body styles, 1.3-litre petrol and 1.9-litre diesel, 46 to 51 kW

The Suzuki Samurai is the export name for the SJ413/SJ410 line introduced in 1985, a compact off-roader with a ladder frame and live axles that was also sold in many countries as the SJ or, built under licence in Spain, as the Santana. The Commercial suffix marks the two-seat utility version with blanked rear windows and a flat load floor, Van the closed body with rear glazing, and Pick-up the open bed; Rhino and Blue Lagoon were special editions, LX an upper trim level.

The register lists 17 versions here with 46 to 51 kW from four-cylinder engines of 1,298 to 1,900 cm³ displacement, weights of 885 to 1,200 kg, gross vehicle weights of 1,330 to 1,470 kg, lengths around 3,470 to 3,480 mm and widths of 1,520 to 1,640 mm.

As a light, rugged off-roader, the Samurai sat below the larger Vitara and competed with the Lada Niva and early Daihatsu off-roaders; the Commercial version was widely registered as an inexpensive utility vehicle for agriculture, forestry and trades.

On a used example, rust on the box-section ladder frame and crossmembers matters most, along with the condition of the front axle's free-wheeling hubs and kingpins, the clutch, and on early models the carburettor. Because the mechanicals are simple and well supported with parts through off-road specialists, frame rust and bodywork condition usually matter more than the drivetrain.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
