Skyjack scissor lifts SJIII 3215 to SJ9250 RT – from Guelph, Ontario: the number as platform width in inches and height in feet, SJIII for the electric indoor lifts, RT for rough terrain, 1.1 to 6.9 t

Skyjack of Guelph, Ontario, is the Canadian maker that has served the rental market with simply designed scissor lifts since 1985 – owned since 2002 by the automotive supplier Linamar and today, alongside JLG and Genie, North America's third big brand. The type logic follows the American convention but in reverse order: the first digits give the platform width in inches, the last the platform height in feet – an SJIII 3219 is 32 in wide and lifts to 19 ft, an SJIII 4632 46 in and 32 ft, an SJ6832 RT 68 in and 32 ft, an SJ9250 RT 92 in and 50 ft. SJIII marks the third generation of the electric indoor lifts, RT the diesel rough-terrain lifts with all-wheel drive, RTE the electric rough-terrain version; the SJ7127 and SJ7135 are the intermediate class of 71 inch width.

The register lists 20 versions with service weights from 1,089 to 6,895 kg, lengths from 1,780 to 4,470 mm, widths from 800 to 2,340 mm and platform capacities from 227 to 907 kg; the rough-terrain lifts deliver up to 48.5 kW, the indoor lifts run on battery, six register models on LPG.

Skyjack's argument is simplicity: relay-based electrics instead of electronics, colour-coded wiring and a hydraulic system without proportional valves – features rental firms value because technicians repair the lifts without a diagnostic tool.

On used lifts, operating hours, battery condition on SJIII models, play in scissor pins and rails, hydraulic tightness, the function of tilt and overload sensors and a valid periodic inspection are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
