Sisu CM16M – the Finnish multi-axle heavy truck: 6x4 to 10x8, six-cylinder engines of 12.8 to 15.6 litres, 375 to 460 kW

Sisu Auto of Kankaanpää, Finland, has for decades built heavy, extremely off-road-capable multi-axle trucks for construction, forestry and mining work, and, in its own ranges, for the Finnish military. The CM16M range represents the heaviest class of this programme: the type number gives roughly the payload or weight class, and the axle configurations in the name range from 6x4 and 6x6 through 8x4 and 8x8 to 10x4 and 10x8, each with a different number of driven and steered axles, for tipper, crane and special bodies. The vehicles are powered by heavy six-cylinder diesel engines of just under 13 to over 15 litres.

The register lists here 40 versions with 375 to 460 kW from six-cylinders of 12,809 to 15,569 cm³, unladen weights from 13,220 to 38,100 kg, gross weights from 33,000 to 53,500 kg, lengths from 7,520 to 13,500 mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,790 mm.

In Finland and Scandinavia Sisu is a reference brand for extremely off-road-capable multi-axle trucks in construction and forestry as well as military use, where the vehicles must work reliably in adverse weather and terrain; internationally the brand is markedly smaller than Volvo or Scania.

On used examples, operating hours, the condition of axles and transfer case on the multi-axle versions, tipper and crane hydraulics, engine and injection condition, and rust on frame and cab all count; parts run through the Finnish Sisu service network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
