The Schlüter ASL 180 is a model in the ASL series. Production: 1957–1958. The engine delivers 18 hp (13.2 kW), has 1 cylinder, with a displacement of 1,610 cm³. Rated speed is 1,500 rpm. The machine is 2,575 mm long, 1,605 mm wide and 2,180 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,250 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,635 mm. Ground clearance is 365 mm. Top speed is 18.3 km/h. Transmission: 5V / 1R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-16, rear 9-24. The fuel is diesel. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The gearbox offers 5 forward gears. The PTO runs at 391/567 rpm. Around 434 units were built. Rated output across the Schlüter range ranges from 13 to 500 hp; the ASL 180 sits at the bottom of that range with 18 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the DMZ 16 below it with 16 hp and the AS 22 above it with 22 hp. Unladen weight across the Schlüter range ranges from 1,115 to 18,000 kg; here the ASL 180 sits at the bottom of that range with 1,250 kg. 91 Schlüter models across 19 series are on record.

Schlüter ASL – early small tractors from Munich-Freising: ASL 130 and ASL 180, single-cylinder diesels of 1,256 to 1,610 cm³, 9.5 to 13.2 kW, unladen weights from 1,115 to 1,250 kg at 1,500 rpm

Anton Schlüter München is one of the traditional German tractor makers and later moved its tractor production to Freising, before the brand became known in the 1970s and 1980s for very powerful large tractors; the ASL range with the ASL 130 and the ASL 180 instead belongs to the brand's smaller, early models. Both are single-cylinder diesels of comparatively small displacement and unladen weights of little more than a tonne.

The register lists here 2 versions with 9.5 to 13.2 kW, or 13 to 18 hp, from a single cylinder of 1,256 to 1,610 cm³ at 1,500 revolutions per minute. Unladen weights run from 1,115 to 1,250 kg, lengths from 2,440 to 2,575 mm and widths from 1,580 to 1,605 mm; overall height runs from 1,560 mm without to 2,180 mm with the steel cab roof.

Small tractors of this power class served in the post-war period chiefly smaller farming operations for which a full multi-cylinder farm tractor was too expensive or too large, and at Schlüter mark the opposite end from the much later, very large tractors the brand became known for.

On a used ASL, the condition and compression of the single cylinder, the tightness of the cooling system and injection pump, the state of the gearbox and steering, on versions with the steel cab roof its condition and mounting, and corrosion on the frame and mudguards matter.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
