The Scania P310 4X2 from 2004 is a two-axle truck of the P series, which Scania conceived with the lower cab for distribution and local haulage. The number in the name refers to rated output in PS; the dataset gives 228 kW. Power comes from an inline five-cylinder engine of 8,920 cm³ displacement, an engine concept Scania long cultivated in the middle power class.

The code 4X2 describes four wheel positions of which two are driven, the classic configuration with a driven rear axle. At 10,050 mm long and 2,600 mm wide the vehicle is a large straight truck or a tractor with a long body. The permissible gross weight is 19,500 kg, a class suited to beverage logistics, general cargo and building-material distribution.

Compared with later six-wheel variants of the same series, the two-axle truck is simpler in build and cheaper to maintain but offers less payload.

Scania P310 – the 310 hp truck with low cab: P for the short day/distribution cab, 310 as a direct power rating in hp, six-cylinder of around 9 litres, wheel formulas from 4X2 to 6X4

Scania, based in Södertälje, has built trucks since 1902 and in 2004 introduced the PGRT range with a new type logic in which the number behind the cab letter directly gives the engine output in hp. The letter P stands for the low, short cab without sleeping comfort, typical for distribution and construction-site traffic, as opposed to G and R for taller long-haul cabs. The designation P310 thus denotes a truck with around 310 hp engine output; the wheel formulas recorded in the register range from 4X2 through 6X2 to 6X4, with body variants for flatbed, box body and construction use.

The register lists here 7 versions with an output of 228 kW, five- to six-cylinders of 8,867 to 9,291 cm³, unladen weights of 11,800 to 27,050 kg, a gross vehicle weight of 19,000 to 30,000 kg, lengths of 8,330 to 12,190 mm and widths of 2,500 to 2,600 mm.

As a medium-heavy truck with a low cab, the P310 was among the most versatile chassis of the PGRT generation, sought by construction firms, municipalities and regional distribution transport, where the compact cab gives good visibility and the 6X4 formula traction on building sites.

On a used example, operating hours and mileage of the six-cylinder, the condition of clutch and gearbox under construction or distribution use, rust on the chassis and body, on the 6X4 versions also the transfer case and rear axles, and brakes and suspension all count; parts run through the Scania service network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
