Scania LT – early heavy series with L for lorry: six-cylinder engines from 11.0 to 14.2 litres, 258 to 275 kW, chassis up to 30 tonnes gross vehicle weight

Scania, headquartered in Södertälje, has belonged to the Volkswagen group's Traton division since 2018 and has built heavy trucks in Sweden since the 1911 merger of Vabis and Scania. The LT series belongs to an early generation of heavy Scania chassis in which the L designation denotes the basic lorry version; models such as the LT 111, LT 111S 38 and LT 146 (S) 38-6X4/3800+1350 show how engine, drive formula and wheelbase combine in the type designation. The chassis are driven throughout by in-line six-cylinder engines of between eleven and just over fourteen litres, supplied depending on version as two-axle rigids or as 6X4 three-axle trucks with a trailer hitch.

The register lists 7 versions with 258 to 275 kW from six-cylinder engines of 11,018 to 14,180 cm³, kerb weights of 8,050 to 18,850 kg, gross vehicle weights of 22,000 to 30,000 kg, lengths of 7,300 to 9,100 mm and widths of 2,300 to 2,500 mm.

Designed for long-haul and heavy Scandinavian duty, the LT series competed directly with contemporary heavy Volvo models; the wide spread of kerb and gross weight in this register entry reflects both plain tractor units and fully equipped three-axle trucks with crane or tipper bodies.

When buying one of these veteran trucks, the condition of the frame and suspension, corrosion on axles and brake lines, and the availability of parts for the older six-cylinder engines matter most; gearbox and clutch should be checked closely given the high mileages typical of long-haul use, and parts today come mainly through specialist vintage-commercial-vehicle workshops.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
