Scania was formed in 1911 from the merger of Maskinfabriks-Aktiebolaget Scania with Vabis and remains headquartered in Södertälje near Stockholm to this day. The LBS series belongs to the manufacturer's L range, introduced from the late 1960s as the successor to the L-Vabis models; the number in the name roughly denotes engine displacement in tenths of a litre – 110 for the straight-six of around 11 litres, 140 for the V8 of around 14 litres. These trucks mainly hauled semi-trailers and drawbar trailers in long-distance haulage, with bodies and axle configurations recorded in the model designations as combinations of numbers and letters such as 6X2 or S 46.

The LBS series marked the bridge between the traditional long-haul lorry and the modern semi-trailer tractor, and it signalled Scania's rise to become one of Europe's leading commercial-vehicle makers alongside Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and DAF. The V8 variants were regarded as the benchmark for smoothness and pulling power in heavy long-distance haulage.
