Scania LBS – long-haul trucks of the 1970s with 11- and 14-litre engines: straight-six and V8 diesels, 151 to 275 kW, gross vehicle weights up to 25.5 tonnes

Scania was formed in 1911 from the merger of Maskinfabriks-Aktiebolaget Scania with Vabis and remains headquartered in Södertälje near Stockholm to this day. The LBS series belongs to the manufacturer's L range, introduced from the late 1960s as the successor to the L-Vabis models; the number in the name roughly denotes engine displacement in tenths of a litre – 110 for the straight-six of around 11 litres, 140 for the V8 of around 14 litres. These trucks mainly hauled semi-trailers and drawbar trailers in long-distance haulage, with bodies and axle configurations recorded in the model designations as combinations of numbers and letters such as 6X2 or S 46.

The register holds 28 versions here with 151 to 275 kW from six- and eight-cylinder engines of 7,790 to 14,200 cc, kerb weights from 7,430 to 12,540 kg, gross vehicle weights from 15,680 to 25,500 kg, lengths from 6,300 to 9,600 mm and widths from 2,400 to 2,550 mm.

The LBS series marked the bridge between the traditional long-haul lorry and the modern semi-trailer tractor, and it signalled Scania's rise to become one of Europe's leading commercial-vehicle makers alongside Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and DAF. The V8 variants were regarded as the benchmark for smoothness and pulling power in heavy long-distance haulage.

On these model years, check above all for corrosion in the frame and cab mounts, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, and the tightness of the injection pump. Parts for the engine and drivetrain are available through Scania specialists and vintage-vehicle exchanges, while body panels are often only obtainable second-hand or remade to order.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
