The Renault Estafette was a van Renault built from 1959 to 1980, regarded as one of the first European delivery vans with front-wheel drive; the flat, transversely mounted engine-and-gearbox unit under the driver's cab allowed for a low, flat load area. The range was produced in France as a panel van, combi, pick-up and minibus among other body styles; the model names 1000 and 800 denote the payload class in kilograms. Renault is one of the oldest French car makers, founded in 1899; the Estafette was developed as an answer to the Citroën HY and aimed to close its lead in front-wheel-drive delivery vans.
