The Super series from Porsche Diesel includes the S 309. Production: 1961–1963. The engine delivers 40 hp (29.5 kW), has 3 cylinders, with a displacement of 2,625 cm³. Torque is 138 Nm. Rated speed is 2,000 rpm. The machine is 2,840 mm long, 1,170 mm wide and 1,950 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,450 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,770 mm. Ground clearance is 360 mm. Top speed is 23.6 km/h. The tank holds 40 litres. Transmission: 5V/1R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 5.50-16, rear 11-24. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 98 mm. The stroke is 116 mm. Maximum torque is reached at 1,650 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The gearbox offers 5 forward gears. The Super series covers 15 models. Rated output within it ranges from 30 to 40 hp; the S 309 sits at the top of that range with 40 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the Super N308 below it with 38 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,450 to 2,460 kg; here the S 309 sits at the bottom of that range with 1,450 kg. 47 Porsche Diesel models across 7 series are on record.

Porsche-Diesel Super (1956–1963) – the three-cylinder from Friedrichshafen: Super 308 to 339, Super L, N, S and Export, the first digit as cylinder count, the last as hp, air-cooled with hydraulic clutch, 22 to 30 kW

The Porsche-Diesel Super is the three-cylinder of the Porsche tractors – the range between the Junior with one, the Standard with two and the Master with four cylinders that Mannesmann built in Friedrichshafen from 1956 after taking over Allgaier's tractor division. The design goes back to Ferdinand Porsche's Volksschlepper: air-cooled modular engines with identical cylinders for all sizes, a hydraulic clutch that allowed starting without a clutch pedal, and the red livery with the Porsche script. The type logic: the first digit gives the cylinder count, the following ones the output in hp – Super 308 about 30 hp, Super 318 about 32 hp in the upgraded form, Super 339 about 38 hp; the letters L, N and S mark versions with long wheelbase, normal layout and narrow track, Export the version for overseas markets, B an equipment variant.

The register lists 15 versions with 22 to 30 kW (30 to 40 hp), 2,467 to 2,625 cm³ with three cylinders, rated speeds of 2,000 to 2,300 rpm, torque from 136 to 140 Nm, unladen weights from 1,450 to 2,460 kg, lengths from 2,800 to 3,510 mm, widths from 1,150 to 1,871 mm and heights from 1,450 to 1,950 mm – all diesel.

Porsche-Diesel built about 125,000 tractors until 1963, then Renault took over sales and production ended – the Super with the smooth three-cylinder was the best-bought model of the middle class and is today the most sought-after Porsche tractor.

Used Supers are collector pieces with prices that reflect the Porsche name; when buying, originality, the condition of the air-cooled cylinders and blower, the hydraulic clutch, gearbox and sheet metal count; the club scene and remanufacturers secure the parts.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
