The AP range stands at the beginning of the Porsche Diesel story: it grew out of the cooperation between Allgaier and Porsche in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, before Porsche took over the tractor business fully in 1956; the AP code refers to this Allgaier-Porsche phase of the 1950s. The type numbers 16, 17 and 22 directly denote the power in hp, and the S suffix on the AP22S an uprated version.

At around 16 to 22 hp, the AP range belonged to the lower class of West German post-war tractors and competed with comparable small tractors from Fendt, Eicher and Hanomag; it served mainly smaller farms during the early mechanisation of agriculture.
On a used AP tractor, the condition and tightness of the air-cooled two-cylinder diesel engine, rust on the sheet-metal panels and wings, the condition of the steering and brakes, and the completeness of fittings such as the PTO and belt pulley all count, as these are often missing or were retrofitted on these early models. It is also worth checking the originality of the type plate, since engines swapped from other models in the range do occur on tractors of this class.
