Peugeot J5 – collective page for the large 1981–1994 van, twin sibling of the Citroën C25 and Fiat Ducato, four-cylinder engines from 1.8 to 2.5 litres, a popular motorhome base

The J5 was Peugeot's large van of 1981 to 1994, built at the Sevel Sud plant in Atessa in central Italy, run jointly with Fiat. Identical sibling models were the Citroën C25 and the first-generation Fiat Ducato; the brands differed mainly in the front end, interior and engine range. Model designations combine payload class (such as 1000, 1400, 1800 for approximate payload in kilograms), body variant (G for panel van, K and L for flatbed) and engine, with TD denoting turbodiesel.

The register lists 65 versions here, all from four-cylinder engines, 1,796 to 2,500 cm³ displacement, kerb weights of 1,367 to 3,220 kg, gross vehicle weights of 2,350 to 3,500 kg and widths of 1,960 to 2,380 mm.

Thanks to its generous, rectangular load space and rugged engineering, the J5 became one of Europe's most popular motorhome conversion bases, alongside its use as a conventional panel and flatbed van for trades and commerce; contemporaries included the Ford Transit, VW LT and Mercedes-Benz T1.

On a used example, check for corrosion on the sills, wheel arches and lower door edges, the condition of the head gasket and injection pump on the diesel engines, and, on motorhome conversions, damp in the build and the condition of the furniture fixings. Chassis and engine parts are available through the PSA network and via dealers specialising in youngtimers.

What to check before buying

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
