Opel Zafira-B Van: the collection page for the compact van's commercial version, CDTI and Ecotec engine codes, 1.6 to 1.9-litre displacement, panel body without rear seats

The Zafira-B Van is the commercial version of the Opel Zafira B introduced in 2005, a compact van known in its passenger form for the Flex7 seating system; in the Van version the rear seat rows are omitted in favour of a flat load floor, and the side windows behind the B-pillar are usually blanked. The engine codes follow GM's naming scheme: A17DTJ and Z19DT denote 1.7- and 1.9-litre CDTI common-rail diesels, Z16YNG and Z18XER petrol engines from the Ecotec family; the DPF suffix marks the standard diesel particulate filter, AC the air conditioning.

The register lists 17 versions here with 1,598 to 1,910 cm³ displacement from four-cylinder engines, weights of 1,300 to 1,505 kg, gross vehicle weights of 1,840 to 2,250 kg and a constant width of 1,800 mm.

As a low-cost alternative to purpose-built panel vans, the Zafira-B Van targeted tradespeople and small businesses wanting car-like handling combined with load space; it competed with the commercial versions of the Renault Scénic and Citroën Xsara Picasso, and with the Citroën Berlingo van.

On a used example, check for rust on the rear wheel arches and tailgate, the condition of the FlexRide chassis, and on the CDTI engines the timing belt or chain and the particulate filter's vulnerability under mostly short-trip use; also inspect the load-floor trim mounting points and the side door seals.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
