Opel Movano – large panel van based on the Renault Master since 1998: length and height variants L1H1 to L3H3, 2.8- to 3.5-tonne weight classes, CDTI engines from 1.9 to 3.0 litres

The Opel Movano has been built in joint construction with the Renault Master since its 1998 launch, produced at the French plant in Batilly and, in Britain, formerly also by IBC Vehicles in Luton for the right-hand-drive market; Nissan sells the same technology as the NV400 or Interstar. The type codes in the model names follow the shared platform: L1 to L3 denote the wheelbase and length variants, H1 to H3 the roof heights, alongside the permissible gross weights of 2.8, 3.3 and 3.5 tonnes in which the Movano is offered as a panel van, combi, dropside or chassis cab. It is powered by the CDTI diesel engines from the Renault-Opel cooperation, mostly four-cylinder units in the second generation.

The register lists versions with power outputs from 66 to 110 kW, displacements from 1,870 to 2,953 cm³ and four cylinders throughout. Unladen weights range from 1,722 to 3,100 kg, permissible gross weights from 2,270 to 3,500 kg, body widths from 1,960 to 2,390 mm; length figures are only recorded for a smaller share of the models.

As a sister model to the Renault Master and Nissan NV400, the Movano competes with the Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit and Volkswagen Crafter in the large-van segment for trades, furniture transport and motorhome conversions.

When buying used, check the timing chain or timing belt depending on the engine variant, the EGR valves and turbocharger, rust on the sliding door tracks and load-sill reinforcement, the suspension under heavy loads, and the clutch on high-mileage examples; spare parts are readily available through the shared Renault-Opel parts programme.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
