Opel CAMPO – the Isuzu pickup under the Opel badge: TFR and TFS chassis with 2.5 to 3.1-litre diesel engines, 56 to 84 kW, 1,380 to 2,250 kg unladen weight

The Opel Campo is a pickup engineered by Isuzu that Opel sold under its own badge in Europe from 1991 to 2001; the vehicles initially came from Japanese and Thai production and from the mid-1990s were also assembled by IBC Vehicles in Luton, Britain. The TFR and TFS type codes come from Isuzu's own system: TFR marks the rear-wheel-drive, TFS the four-wheel-drive versions, supplemented by cab variants such as Sports Cab and Crew Cab and by the Pick-up, tipper (Kipper/SL) and Big Deck bodies.

The register lists here 23 versions with 56 to 84 kW from four-cylinders of 2,490 to 3,059 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 1,380 to 2,250 kg, gross weights from 2,550 to 2,810 kg, lengths from 4,920 to 5,100 mm and widths from 1,690 to 2,160 mm.

The Campo positioned itself as an affordable alternative to the factory pickups of European makes and targeted tradespeople, farmers and commercial users looking for a rugged ladder-frame pickup with a diesel engine; in Germany and other markets it stood alongside the identical Isuzu model under its own name.

On used Campo vehicles, rust on the frame, load bed and wheel arches, the condition of the injection pump and turbocharger on the TD versions, the transfer case and freewheel hubs on the four-wheel-drive models, and brakes and suspension all count; spare parts run largely through the Isuzu network, since the technical base is identical.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
