Rated output within it ranges from 54 to 133 hp; the 1650 (4WD) sits in the lower part of that range with 67 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 1550 below it with 54 hp and the 1750 (4WD) above it with 81 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 3,175 to 6,595 kg; here the 1650 (4WD) sits at the bottom of that range with 3,545 kg. 70 Oliver models across 13 series are on record.

Oliver 50 series (1964–1969) – the last green Olivers from Charles City before White: 1550 to 2150, the hundreds number as size class, 50 as series, Oliver four- and six-cylinders, Perkins and GM two-stroke, petrol

The 50 series was the second generation of the four-digit Oliver tractors with which the maker from Charles City, Iowa, took on John Deere and International Harvester in the 1960s – owned since 1960 by White Motor, which in 1969 merged the brand with Minneapolis-Moline and Cockshutt into White Farm Equipment. The type logic: the hundreds number orders the size class in ascending order – 1550 about 54 hp, 1650 about 66, 1750 about 80, 1850 about 92, 1950 about 105 hp, 2050 and 2150 the big models over 115 hp – 50 marks the series succeeding the 00 range (1600, 1800, 1900). The engines show Oliver's variety: own four- and six-cylinders in the 1550 to 1750 and in the 2050 and 2150 (of 7.8 litres), the Perkins 6.354 in the 1850, in the 1950 at first the GM 4-53 two-stroke diesel from Detroit Diesel and then as 1950-T the turbocharged Oliver six-cylinder; petrol, LPG and diesel were available on most models, four-wheel drive as 4WD.

The register lists 8 versions with 39.7 to 97.8 kW from four- and six-cylinders of 3,479 to 7,837 cm³ at 2,200 to 2,400 rpm, unladen weights from 3,175 to 6,595 kg, lengths from 3,523 to 4,122 mm, widths from 1,938 to 2,197 mm and heights from 1,904 to 2,403 mm.

The 50s are regarded as the best Olivers: the Hydra-Power powershift, the Over/Under Hydraul-Shift preselector and the cabs of the late years made them popular on the prairies; in 1969 the 55 series followed, and from 1975 everything was called White.

On used tractors, originality, engine condition (on the 1950 the two-stroke GM with its own character), Hydra-Power transmission, hydraulics and PTO, sheet metal and tyres count; parts run through AGCO successor dealers and Oliver collector specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
