Oliver 100 series (Charles City, Iowa) – the big tractors of the early White era: 1600 to 1900 A, four- and six-cylinders of 3.5 to 4.6 litres, petrol, LPG or diesel, 42 to 75 kW, 3.3 to 5.9 t

The Oliver 1600, 1800 and 1900 range was the maker's large standard and utility class from Charles City, Iowa, whose plant traced back to the Hart-Parr Company and which merged into the Oliver Farm Equipment Company in 1929; in 1960 the White Motor Company took over Oliver, so this range already falls into the early White era. The type logic orders the 1600, 1800 and 1900 models in ascending size, the A suffix marking a revised version; the engines range from a four-cylinder in the 1600 to a six-cylinder in the 1900, with a choice of petrol, LPG or diesel drive, one engine listed in the register as a Waukesha-Oliver.

The register lists 6 versions with 41.9 to 75 kW from four- and six-cylinders of 3,479 to 4,639 cm³ at around 1,900 to 2,200 rpm, unladen weights from 3,284 to 5,854 kg, lengths from 3,927 to 4,051 mm, widths from 2,070 to 2,464 mm and heights from 1,956 to 2,629 mm.

The 1600 to 1900 were among the large field tractors of the American Midwest in the early 1960s and competed with International Harvester, John Deere and Case; the range was replaced in 1964 by the new, restyled series numbered 1550 to 1950.

On used tractors, engine and carburettor or LPG system or diesel injection pump depending on version, clutch and gearbox, hydraulics and rear axle, sheet metal and frame for rust count; parts for the old Oliver tractors now run through Oliver specialists and remanufacturers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
