The Vito arrived in 1996 as the W638 and has since formed the mid-size van segment of Mercedes-Benz Vans together with the passenger-oriented V-Class, built at the Spanish plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The first generation was followed by the W639 in 2003 and the current W447 in 2014, based on a shared platform with the Renault Trafic from Daimler's cooperation with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The CDI designation denotes common-rail diesel technology; the Vito is offered as a pure panel van, as a Mixto with extra seats, and as a Tourer/combi for passenger transport, with rear- or all-wheel drive as an option.
