The McCormick MOGUL 10-20 is a model in the MOGUL series. Production: 1916–1919. The engine delivers 10.1 hp (7.4 kW), has 1 cylinder. Rated speed is 400 rpm. The machine is 3,429 mm long, 1,422 mm wide and 1,778 mm high. The unladen weight is 2,494 kg. Top speed is 4.02 km/h. Transmission: 2 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 36"x 6", rear 54"x 10". The fuel is Kerosin/Gasöl/Benzin. The bore measures 215.9 mm. The stroke is 304.8 mm. Construction: frame construction. Around 8.985 units were built. The MOGUL series covers 6 models. Rated output within it ranges from 8.1 to 45.6 hp; the MOGUL 10-20 sits at the bottom of that range with 10.1 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 8-16 below it with 8.1 hp and the MOGUL 15-30 above it with 15.2 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 2,232 to 9,843 kg; here the MOGUL 10-20 sits at the bottom of that range with 2,494 kg. 381 McCormick models across 40 series are on record.

McCormick MOGUL – International Harvester's 1910s kerosene tractors for McCormick dealers: 8-16 to MOGUL 30-60, the numbers as drawbar and belt horsepower, single- and twin-cylinders, 6 to 33.5 kW

The MOGUL range was International Harvester's early field tractor, sold exclusively through former McCormick dealers by the group formed in 1902 from the merger of McCormick Harvesting and Deering Harvester, while the technically related Titan range was reserved for Deering dealers – a dual strategy with which IHC avoided competition between its own sales networks. The type designation follows the US convention of the day using two numbers: the first the drawbar pull, the second the belt-pulley output, so the 8-16 has 8 drawbar and 16 belt horsepower, up to the huge 30-60 at the top of the line. The engines are slow-running single- and twin-cylinders that ran on kerosene or distillate, for which they were usually started and warmed up on petrol.

The register lists 6 versions with 6 to 33.5 kW from single- and twin-cylinders at 330 to 550 rpm, unladen weights from 2,232 to 9,843 kg, lengths from 3,429 to 5,791 mm, widths from 1,422 to 2,921 mm and heights from 1,549 to 3,023 mm; one version is listed in the register at 8.1 hp and 10,090 cm³.

MOGUL tractors ploughed the prairies of North America in the 1910s and drove threshing machines via the belt pulley, until IHC abandoned the dual Mogul and Titan strategy around 1918/19 and replaced the models with the unified McCormick-Deering 10-20 and 15-30 range of the 1920s.

On these machines, now over a century old, what counts is the condition of the block and cylinder head, the kerosene changeover and carburettor, the evaporative cooling of the early models, and the drive wheels and belt pulley; spare parts are now practically available only through collectors, tractor-pulling associations and remanufacture.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
