With the W-12, Mccormick Deering offers a model from the W series. Production: 1934–1938. The engine delivers 16 hp (11.8 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,853 cm³. The engine comes from International. Rated speed is 1,700 rpm. The machine is 2,616 mm long, 1,270 mm wide and 1,397 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,315 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,524 mm. Top speed is 6 km/h. Transmission: 3 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 22,5 x 3,5, rear 42 x 8. The model was built in Tractor Works, Chicago, Illinois, USA. The fuel is Kerosin/Benzin. The bore measures 76.2 mm. The stroke is 101.6 mm. Construction: frame construction. The gearbox offers 3 forward gears. There are also 1 reverse gears. The linkage is category Drawbar. It was succeeded by the McCormick-Deering W-14. Around 3.631 units were built. The W-Baureihe series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 16 to 32 hp; the W-12 sits at the bottom of that range with 16 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the W-14 above it with 19 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,315 to 2,404 kg; here the W-12 sits at the bottom of that range with 1,315 kg. 58 Mccormick Deering models across 9 series are on record.

McCormick-Deering W range – five US standard-tread tractors from the W-4 to the W-30 plus the Farmall-30, four-cylinder engines of 1,853 to 4,649 cm³, 11.8 to 23.5 kW, 1,150 to 1,700 rpm

The McCormick-Deering W range comprised International Harvester's standard-tread tractors of the 1930s and 1940s with a classic fixed track width, as opposed to the narrow row-crop build of the Farmall models; the register lists here the W-4, W-12, W-14 and W-30 along with the row-crop Farmall-30 in the same power class. The models were driven by four-cylinder engines, some of the International C-152 type.

The register lists here five versions with 11.8 to 23.5 kW from four-cylinder engines of 1,853 to 4,649 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 1,315 to 2,404 kg, lengths from 2,616 to 3,734 mm, widths from 1,270 to 2,267 mm and heights from 1,219 to 2,057 mm at speeds of 1,150 to 1,700 rpm; the models ran on kerosene or petrol engines, some on distillate.

Standard-tread tractors with fixed track width such as the W range were used above all where the narrow row-crop build of the Farmall models offered no advantage, for instance for belt work, transport and in regions without pronounced row-crop farming; International Harvester thus offered a second chassis concept alongside the Farmall line.

When buying used, the condition of cylinder bores and carburettor, tightness of the cooling system, condition of the belt pulley and PTO and corrosion on sheet-metal parts matter; spare parts for the IH four-cylinder engines are available through dealers specialising in historic farm machinery.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
