Its immediate neighbours are the TG,18 4X2 LLS-U below it with 7,750 kg and the TG,18.4X2 LLS above it with 8,030 kg. Gross vehicle weight within it ranges from 18,000 to 37,000 kg; here the TG, 18. 4X2 BLS sits at the bottom of that range with 18,600 kg. 5237 MAN models across 68 series are on record.

MAN TG – the Trucknology Generation since 2000: tonnage and axle formula in the type key, suspension codes BB/BL/BLS, six-cylinders of 10.5 to 15.3 litres, 18 to 37 tonnes gross vehicle weight

MAN introduced the TG range – Trucknology Generation – in 2000 as a common platform for its medium and heavy trucks, replacing the F2000 and L2000 ranges; from 2007 the programme split into TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX, though the type key remained. The digits after TG give the chassis's tonnage class, for example TG 26 for around 26 tonnes or TG 35 for 35 tonnes, while the axle formula such as 6X2 or 8X4 gives the number of axles and driven wheels. The suspension codes follow a fixed pattern: BB denotes leaf suspension on the front and rear axles, BL leaf suspension at the front and air suspension at the rear, and the added S in BLS marks a semi-trailer tractor with this suspension combination. The TG models are powered by MAN's own inline six-cylinder engines.

The register lists here 25 versions with 301 to 338 kW, throughout six cylinders of 10,518 to 15,256 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 7,000 to 24,270 kg, gross vehicle weights from 18,000 to 37,000 kg, lengths from 5,800 to 11,950 mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,550 mm.

For a decade and a half the TG range formed the backbone of MAN's heavy programme in Europe and competed with the Mercedes-Benz Actros, the DAF XF and the Volvo FH; the common cab across all weight classes lowered production costs and shaped MAN's presence in long-haul, distribution and construction work alike.

Buying used, the condition of cab mounting and suspension, the function of the Tipmatic or ZF AS Tronic transmission, rust on the frame and body fittings, and on the newer Euro 5 and Euro 6 models the exhaust-gas recirculation and AdBlue system all count; spare parts run through the MAN dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
