Magirus – other models: the collective page of trucks outside the named ranges, four- to eight-cylinder diesel engines, some air-cooled from Deutz, 3 to 20.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight

This page gathers trucks of the Magirus marque that the register could not assign to a named range. Magirus traces back to the ladder and fire-equipment maker founded in Ulm in 1864 by Conrad Dietrich Magirus, which grew into a commercial-vehicle builder and merged with the engine maker Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) in the 1930s to form Magirus-Deutz. Many models were marked by Deutz's air-cooled diesel engines, shown by the "D" in the type designation; in 1975 Magirus became part of today's Iveco group. Models such as the S 3500 and S 4500 represent the mid-range series here, and designations with the "6X6" suffix the off-road versions with three driven axles.

The register lists 13 versions here with four- to eight-cylinder engines, unladen weights from 3,020 to 15,380 kg, gross vehicle weights from 3,500 to 20,500 kg, lengths from 6,000 to 7,800 mm and widths from 1,950 to 2,520 mm.

Magirus-Deutz trucks shaped the West German commercial-vehicle market and many cities' fire-brigade fleets for decades, competing with Mercedes-Benz, MAN and Henschel; the off-road 6x6 versions also served the Bundeswehr and the construction industry.

When buying used, check the cooling fans and cylinder heads on the air-cooled Deutz engines, corrosion on the cab and frame generally, the condition of the gearbox and transfer case on the 6x6 versions, and the brakes; spare parts today mostly run through Iveco as the legal successor and specialist vintage-vehicle dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
