Krupp KMK mobile cranes – from Wilhelmshaven, to Grove in 1995: the axles-capacity type logic from KMK 2025 to KMK 6300, GMT and the eight-cylinder drives

Krupp built mobile cranes from the 1960s to the mid-1990s at its Wilhelmshaven plant – the crane division of the Essen conglomerate was, alongside Liebherr and Demag, the third German supplier of all-terrain cranes. In 1995 the American maker Grove took over the plant; the Krupp designs lived on in the Grove GMK models, which are still built in Wilhelmshaven today, since 2002 under the Manitowoc umbrella. The KMK types in the register – Krupp Mobilkran – follow a clear logic: the first digit gives the axle count, the following ones the maximum capacity in tonnes. A KMK 2025 is therefore a 25-tonner on two axles, a KMK 4070 a 70-tonner on four, a KMK 5110 a 110-tonner on five, a KMK 6300 a 300-tonner on six axles. The older 70GMT-AT and 140GMT-AT stand for the generation before, in which the capacity came first and GMT denoted lattice-telescopic combinations.

The register lists 20 versions with service weights from 36,061 to 165,000 kg, eight-cylinder engines of 14,620 to 21,931 cm³ and 156 to 270 kW, torque from 560 to 1,619 Nm at rated speeds of 2,100 to 2,600 rpm and widths from 2,750 to 2,860 mm.

The Krupp cranes were known for their two-engine layout – one engine in the carrier for travel, one in the superstructure for crane operation – and for the Megatrak axles with hydropneumatic suspension that Grove adopted.

Used KMK cranes are today machines with 25 to 35 years of service; when buying, the condition of telescopic boom and locking, slew ring, outriggers, ropes and load moment limiter count, plus the inspection history and parts supply, which is still partly possible through Grove dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
