Krone AZW – trailer from the Werlte commercial vehicle maker: six versions with 18 to 20 t gross weight, the type number matches the gross weight in tonnes

Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone grew out of the blacksmith's business Bernard Krone founded in Spelle in 1906; after years of building agricultural machinery, the commercial vehicle division for trailers and semi-trailers was set up in 1971 at the new Werlte plant. The AZW range covers the brand's trailers in the register; on models such as AZW 18 and AZW 20, the number in the type designation matches the gross weight in tonnes.

The register lists 6 versions with unladen weights from 3,000 to 5,280 kg, gross weights from 18,000 to 20,000 kg, lengths from 8,240 to 9,250 mm and widths from 2,420 to 2,510 mm.

Trailers of this class extend truck chassis into drawbar combinations for general freight and are used where swap-body or pallet loads are split between two loading decks; in this market segment Krone competes with manufacturers such as Schmitz Cargobull and Fliegl. Their shorter length compared with semi-trailers also makes manoeuvring on tight depot yards easier.

When buying used, check the drawbar and overrun brake for play and braking effect, the frame and side members for corrosion, the axles, brakes and tyres, and, depending on the body, the tarpaulin, roller shutters and lashing rails; the registration papers should be checked against the actual vehicle condition for the permitted axle loads.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
