Kromhout was a Dutch maker of trucks and diesel engines based in Amsterdam that built its own in-line and V-configuration engines until the 1960s; type codes such as V4 and V6T refer to the cylinder count and layout of these in-house designs. Kromhout trucks had a presence in Dutch freight transport in the post-war decades but remained in the shadow of larger marques such as DAF; in-house engine production made the vehicles technically self-sufficient, though it lost ground as international diesel-engine programmes grew, until truck production ceased. On building sites and in Amsterdam's port handling, the sturdy chassis remained in service long after younger marques had come to dominate the roads.
On these historic chassis, the condition and tightness of the in-house engine, frame and cab corrosion, and the brake system and axles all matter; since engine production ended long ago, parts are mainly available through Dutch classic commercial-vehicle clubs.
