The 7R series is John Deere's large standard-tractor range for professional arable farming, replacing the 7030 series, built both at the home plant in Waterloo, Iowa, and at the European plant in Mannheim. Two naming schemes sit side by side in the register: the older style with the series digit first and an R suffix (7290R, 7310R) and the newer one, where the power figure follows directly after "7R" (7R 250 to 7R 350) – a switch Deere made alongside the Final Tier 4 emissions standard. All models use the same in-house 9.0-litre six-cylinder, whose SCR exhaust treatment with AdBlue is noted explicitly in the fuel entry for the newer models.

7R tractors are the prime movers for heavy implements and large trailers in professional arable farming, competing directly with Case IH's Magnum and Fendt's Vario 900 range.
