John Deere articulated dump trucks 250C to 460E – built by Bell in South Africa: the number as payload in short tons times ten, Mercedes engines in the C and D generation, Deere engines from the E generation, 177 to 359 kW
John Deere's articulated haulers are Bell designs: since 1999 Deere has worked with Bell Equipment of Richards Bay, South Africa, the specialist that builds the haulers for Deere in yellow – and the register rows prove it, because the C and D models carry Mercedes-Benz engines OM 366, OM 442, OM 501 and OM 906 as Bell uses them. The type logic: the number gives the payload in short tons times ten – 250 about 25 t, 300 30 t, 350 35 t, 400 40 t, 460 46 t – C and D are the generations of the 2000s, E the generation from 2011, in which Deere used its own PowerTech 6135 and 6090 engines in the 410E and 460E and partly moved production to Davenport, Iowa; the 300D Water Wagon is the chassis for water-tank bodies for dust suppression.

The register lists 11 versions with 176.7 to 358.7 kW from six-cylinders of 5,949 to 15,076 cm³, torque from 803 to 2,285 Nm at 1,800 to 2,500 rpm, lengths from 9,168 to 11,531 mm, widths from 2,743 to 3,810 mm and heights from 3,380 to 4,260 mm.
The Bell design with the single engine up front, the oscillating hitch between tractor and body and the Allison transmission is common in North America in Deere colours; the 460E with 46 t payload belongs to the largest class of articulated haulers, in which only Volvo and Bell itself carry more.
On used trucks, operating hours, play in articulation joint and oscillation bearings, the condition of body cylinders, brakes and transmission and the tyres count; parts run through Deere dealers, for Mercedes engines also through their network.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
